How the calculation works

Each row takes the end time minus the start time, subtracts the break, and shows the result two ways. Hours and minutes are what you feel; decimal hours are what a timesheet, a payroll system or an invoice wants, because they multiply cleanly by a rate. A shift that crosses midnight is handled: if the end is earlier than the start, the calculator assumes the next day.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate hours worked?

Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract any unpaid break. 9:00 to 17:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes; minus a 30 minute lunch it is 8 hours. If a shift crosses midnight, add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 is 0.5, 45 is 0.75, 20 is 0.33. Payroll and invoicing systems usually want the decimal form, which is why the calculator shows both.

Does the calculator store anything?

No. It runs entirely in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere. Refreshing the page clears it. Timeness keeps a running record on your phone if you want the totals without retyping.
